Maids file crime raps vs Billionaire

Two battered housemaids yesterday filed charges of physical injuries and illegal detention against Chinese billionaire Mariano Tanenglian before the Quezon City Police District.

Tanenglian, brother of tycoon Lucio Tan, was slapped with criminal raps by Mary Jane Sollano, 18, and Aljane Bacanto, 16. The victims were accompanied by their counsel, Atty. Al Parreno.

Parreno said the complainants were allegedly not allowed by the Tangelians to go out of the billionaire’s house for five years. The two maids were reportedly subjected to physical harm by the Chinese billionaire’s wife, Aleta, and their two children.

Sollano was “rescued” by the Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development and operatives of the QCPD Women’s Desk after Bacanto managed to escape from the Tanenglian’s residence at 30 Sto. Domingo corner Dapitan Streets, Brgy. Biak na Bato, last August 10.

Bacanto went to Sollano’s parents who thought their daughter was already dead. The “rescue team” was reportedly made to sign a waiver indicating that the victims would not file a complaint against the Tangelians.

After seven hours of negotiations, Sollano was released by her employers and given P2,500 salary, which she claimed was her first during her entire stay with the Tanenglians.

Shortly after her release, Sollano reportedly underwent psychiatric examination to recover from trauma. The two maids then decided to file charges against the Tanenglians. As to the waiver they signed, the complainant’s former lawyer Melanie Trinidad said the victims can still file a complaint since it was signed “under duress.”

Battered maids raps bosses

The two housemaids who were maltreated by their Filipino-Chinese employers filed a complaint against the suspects with the Quezon City Police District.

Mary Jane Sollano, 18, and Aljane Bacanto, 16, were accompanied by their lawyer, Al Parreño, in filing charges of physical injuries and illegal detention against Mariano Tanenglian and his wife.

Parreño said the victims were not allowed to go out of the house at the time they worked with the Tanenglians.

He said the victims were oftentimes subjected to physical abuse by Tangelian’s wife, Aleta, and their two children.

Sollano was rescued by the Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development and QC Police Women’s Desk.

Bacanto escaped from the employer’s home last Aug. 10.

Pormal nang naghain ng reklamo sa pulisya kahapon ang dalawang housemaid laban sa bilyonaryong Tsinoy na kapatid ng isang business tycoon na umano’y nagmaltrato sa kanila sa loob ng ilang taon sa lungsod ng Quezon.

Ang mga biktima na itinago s mga pangalang Marie, 19, at Lucia, 18, ay nagsadya sa tanggapan nga Women’s Children and Concerned Desk (WCCD) ng Laloma Station 1 ng QCPD kasama ang abogadong si Atty. Al Parreno para sa pormal na paghahain ng reklamo laban sa pamiya ni Mariano Tanenglian, negosyante at residente sa # 30 Sto. Domingo St., Brgy. Biak na Bato sa lungsod.

Ayon kay Parreno, kasong maltreatment at illegal detention ang maaring isampa ng mga biktima laban sa nasabing pamilya bunga ng umano’y naranasang trauma ng mga ito na hanggang ngayon ay dinadala pa rin.

Dagdag ng abogado, sa ngayon isinasailalim pa rin ang mga biktima sa physical at psychological examination upang maging maayos ang kanilang pag-iisip bago harapin ang kasalukuyang problema.

Samantala, tumanggi rin ang abogado na ipakausap sa mga mamamahayag ang mga biktima upang hindi umano mabigla sa sitwasyon ang mga ito.

Hindi rin tiniyak ni Parreno kung kailan ang nabanggit na complaint na isinumite sa piskalya dahil kailangan pa umanong pagpahingahin ang isipan ng mga biktima.

Magugunitang Agosto 10 nang irescue ng pinagsanib na tropa ng WCCD, Commission on Human Rights at grupo ng mga abogado ang biktimang si Lucia, matapos ipagbigay alam ni Marie ang dinaranas nitong hirap sa kamay ng pamilya Tanenglian.

Utol ni Lucio Tan kinasuhan

Sinampahan na ng maltreatment at illegal detention ang sinasabing kaanak ni Lucio Tan na si Mariano Tanenglian dahil sa pang-aabuso sa kanyang dalawang kasambahay sa Quezon City.

Isinampa ang kaso laban kay Tanenglian, residente ng #30 Biak na Bato St., cor. Sto. Domingo, Sta. Mesa Heights, Quezon City, sa Quezon City Police District Station 1 sa Loma, ng dalawang kasambahay dakong 10 a.m. kahapon.

Nagtungo sa nasabing himpilan ng pulisya ang dalawang kasambahay, edad 18 at 19 anyos, kasama ng kanilang abogadong si Atty. Al Pareno.

Ayon kay Nena, 18-anyos, nagsimula siyang manilbihan sa pamilya Tanenglian nang siya’y 16-anyos pa lamang ngunit dumanas ng kalupitan sa kanyang amo hanggang sa siya’y mailigtas kamakailan ng mga awtoridad.

Samantala, si Baby, 19, ay nakatakas mula sa bahay ni Tanenglian at siyang nagsumbong sa himpilan ng pulisya hinggil sa pagmamaltrato ng kanilang amo.

Utol ni Lucio Tan, kinasuhan ng 2 kasambahay

Nagsampa ng pormal na reklamo ang dalawang kasambahay na umano’y nakatakas sa kamay ng kapatid ng business tycoon na si Lucio Tan na minaltrato sa loob ng limang taon sa Quezon City.

Sinamahan ng kanilang abogado na si Al Parreno, na magtungo sa Quezon City Police District (QCPD) ang dalawng katulong na sina Mary Jane Sollano, 18, at Aljane Bacanto, 16, para ipagharap ng kasong physical injuries at illegal detention si Mariano Tanenglian.

Sinabi ni Parreno na sa loob ng limang taon na pagtatrabaho sa pamilya Tanenglian, hindi umano pinapayagan ang mga katulong na lumabas ng bahay.

May insidente pa na sinasaktan ng asawa ni Tanenglian na si Aleta at dalawang anak nito ang mga katulong.

Si Sollano ay nailigtas ng Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development at operatiba ng QCPD Women’s Desk matapos na makatakas si Bacanto sa bahay ng kanyang amo s no. 30 Sto. Domingo kanto ng Dapitan Street, Barangay Biak na Bato noong Agosto 10.

Napag-alaman na pinapirma ang “rescue team” ng isang ‘waiver’ na hindi na maghain ng reklamo ang mga biktima laban sa mga Tanenglian.

Matapos ang pitong oras na negosasyon, pinakawalan si Sollano at binayaran ng P2,500 na sahod sa loob ng kanyang buong taong pananatili.

Dagdag pa ng abogado, sa ngayon isinasailalim pa rin ang mga biktima sa physical at psychological examination upang maging maayos ang kanilang pag-iisip bago harapin ang kasalukuyang problema.

Maids file complaint vs Mariano Tan

Despite having signed a “settlement” with their former employer, two women filed a formal complaint against Mariano Tan for the abuse they allegedly received when they worked for him as housemaids.

Mary Jane Sollano, 18, and Aljane Bacanto, 19, went to the Quezon City Police District-Station 1 to give their sworn statements against the family of their former employer, an estranged brother of businessman Lucio Tan.

Lawyer Al Parreño said Bacanto escaped Tan’s house in Barangay Sto. Domingo and informed Sollano’s parents about their plight, leading to Sollano’s rescue.

Parreño said that they hope to be able to file criminal charges against Tan, his wife and two children today.

“We are looking into the possibility of filing charges of serious illegal detention, frustrated homicide and serious physical injuries,” Parreño said in an interview.

Asked about the settlement earlier signed by Sollano’s family with her former boss, Parreño said: “A compromise agreement is not a basis for (evading) criminal liability.” Village officials and police said the P150,000 was to cover Sollano’s unpaid salaries for the past five years.

He said it took time for the two house helpers to file the complaint after Sollano’s rescue last week since the two had to undergo counseling.

“They’re still undergoing psychological and medical treatment for the trauma they suffered,” Parreño said, adding that Teresita Ang-See’s group, Kaisa Foundation, has been helping the two women.

The house helpers claimed they suffered physical, emotional and psychological abuse at the hands of Tan’s wife and two children. Sollano claimed she was imprisoned in Tan’s house for five years while Bacanto said she was trapped there for three years.

Tan’s brother faces detention raps

Two former maids of the family of Mariano Tanenglian, brother of business tycoon Lucio Tan, yesterday filed complaints of illegal detention and physical injuries against their employer before the Quezon City police.

One of the housemaids escaped while the other was rescued by authorities on Aug. 10 from the Tanenglian residence at 30 Biak Na Bato corner Dapitan St., Sto. Domingo village.

Mary Jane Sollano, 18, who hails from Zamboanga del Sur, and Aljane Bacanto,19, from Leyte, went to Station 1 of the QCPD to file the complaint, accompanied by their lawyer Al Parreno.

He said they filed charges of serious illegal detention and physical injuries against Mariano, his wife and their two children.

“We filed the complaint before the police for them to conduct further investigation to determine if there is sufficient evidence to proceed with the filing of charges before the prosecutors,” Parreno told Standard Today in a telephone interview.

He said Sollano has been staying at the Tanenglian household for five years, while Bacanto served the family for three years.

The two claimed to have been maltreated, not paid wages and barred from going out of the house.

Bacanto managed to escape from the Tanenglian residence earlier this month and informed Sollano’s parents about her plight.

Sollano’s parents then sought the help of the Commission on Human Rights and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Lawyer Melanie Trinidad said that during the negotiation for Sollano’s release, she and Sollano’s father were asked by the Tanenglian family counsel to sign a waiver that she would not press charges against them.

Parreno of Diaz, Parreno, and Caringal Law Office said he has taken over as lawyer of the maids although Trinidad was still “helping in the case,” without elaborating.

He said he was handling several cases at the Station 1, and volunteered his services.

Parreno said the maids were undergoing couseling through Teresita Ang See’s Kaisa Foundation, which helps battered women.

2 maids file complaint vs Tan brother

Two former housemaids of the businessman-brother of tycoon Lucio Tan Thursday filed a complaint against Mariano Tanenglian and his family, alleging that they were maltreated and detained against their will.

“They filed their complaint against the Tanenglian family for maltreatment and illegal detention and were accompanied by a lawyer,” said Police Officer 3 Marilou Salanap, Women’s Desk investigator of the QCPD Station 1 in La Loma, Quezon City.

Salanap said Mary Jane Sollano, 18, from Zamboanga del Sur, and Aljane Bacanto, 19, from Leyte did not give other details.

According to Al Pareno, the victims’ lawyer, the subjects of the complaint were Mariano, his wife, Aleta, and their two children, Marvin and Fayette.
Sollano was rescued by the Commission on Human Rights and police from Tanenglian’s house in Biak na Bato, Quezon City on Aug. 10, following Bacanto’s escape earlier.

A police report showed that Sollano’s father accepted P150,000 from Tanenglian in exchange for a signed document saying they would not pursue and participate in a case filed against Tanenglian.

But Pareno said the waiver signed by Sollano’s father had no bearing on the complaint filed against Tanenglian.

“The compromise agreement is different from the complaints of the victims,” the lawyer said. The complaints indicated that Sollano, who said she was employed by the Tanenglian family for five years, was maltreated by the family, just like Bacanto, who stayed with the family for three years. Both also claimed they were not paid for their work and were not allowed to leave the house nor communicate with relatives.

The two are now under the care of Kaisa Foundation which helps women who have been victims of violence.

Inquirer tried but failed to reach Tanenglian for comment.
