Domingo, Quezon City at ilang Jane at John Does.

Nasagip lamang ang biktima noong Agosto 10 sa tulong ng Department of Social Welfare and Development, Commission on Human Rights at La Loma Police Station.

Domingo Quezon City at ilang Jane at John Does.

Maid raps billionaire boss

The 18-year old battered housemaid earlier rescued by authorities from the house of her billionaire employer in Quezon City yesterday filed charges before the Department of Justice.

Represented by her lawyer, victim Mary Jane Sollano filed maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide charges against Mariano Tanenglian, his wife Aleta, and children Maximillian and Fayette.

Sollano’s affidavit detailed how she was physically and mentally abused by the family from July up to Aug. 10 this year.

She said she and her fellow helpers were not allowed to use the telephone, laugh, sit in the family’s chairs, look outside the window, watch TV, eat at any time, sleep or rest, read or even write.

She alleged Aleta and Fayette took nude photos of her and threatened to show it to other people.

Sollano was rescued by agents of the Quezon City Police District, Commission on Human Rights and Social Welfare and Development from Tanenglian’s house last Aug. 10.

Maid files more raps vs Billionaire

Mary Jane Sollano’s hands must have burst with red, raw sores as hot water was poured on them. The battered maid was allegedly punished for eating food of her employers, Chinoy billionaire Mariano Tanenglian and his family. Sometimes, her bosses reportedly took nude photos of her and the other helpers, then whacked them with steel pipes, or chained their necks.

Sollano, represented by her lawyer Al Parreno, yeaterday filed additional criminal charges of maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide before the Department of Justice agains Mariano Tanenglian, his wife Aleta, as well as children Maximillian and Fayette.

In a three-page affidavit, Sollano detailed how she was allegedly “physically and mentally abused” by the Tanenglian family inside their residence at Brgy. Siena in Quezon City from July 2004 to Aug. 10. The maid claimed she and her fellow helpers were “not allowed to use the telephone or cellphone, laugh, sit in their (family’s) chairs, look outside the window, watch TV, eat at any time, sleep or rest before our tasks were completed, and read any reading material or even write.

During her first month at the Tanenglian household, Sollano alleged she was already maltreated and abused by the Tanenglians. “I was not yet familiar with my job so Ate Aleta got mad and slapped me. Since then, they would instantly hurt me for every small mistake I make,” she said. “In my five-year stay in their house, I was not allowed to go out. They even threatened me that they would do something bad if I ask for help from outside.”

Sollano said she tried to escape by asking permission to go home to her province in Zamboanga del Sur, but her employers would not allow her. She was told that she had to finish her two-year contract.

When her contract ended in 2006, Alete supposedly called a lawyer and told the housemaid to sign a new contract without reading its contents. She only learned later on that she signed the new contract for another two years service in the house.

Sollano added that she pleaded to her employer to let her go, but Aleta said she still had debts to pay.

“I could not do anything but to just follow (them),” she lamented.

She even recalled an instance where she was brought by Aleta and Fayette to a room where they tool nude photos of her.

“When they were not yet satisfied, they would hit me with steel or slippers and threaten me that they would show my nude photos to other people or bring me to a nightclub owned by Ate Aleta’s friend,” she alleged.

Sollano said Fayette once poured hot water on her hands after she was caught eating their food. In another incident, her hands and neck were supposedly chained.

Attached with the complaint were affidavits from police, Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development as well as other persons present during the rescue of the housemaid.

Sollano, who had been working for Tangelian’s household for five years anf two months, was rescued by operatives from the Quezon City Police District, CHR and DSWD last Aug. 10.

Fearing she was dead, her parents learned of their daughter’s whereabouts only through the help of Aljane Bacanto, a fellow housemaid who escaped the Tangelian’s household recently.

Charges filed vs Lucio Tan brod, other kin

Criminal charges were filed yesterday before the Department of Justice (DOJ) against Lucio Tan’s brother Mariano Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and their two children based on the complaint of their 18-year-old housemaid, who was earlier rescued by police authorities from their residence.

The housemaid, Mary Jane Sollano, was accompanied by her lawyer Al Parreno to the DOJ in filing the complaint before the office of State Prosecutor Edna Valenzuela.

Attached to the complaint were affidavits of representatives of the police, Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development, relatives of the victim and other individuals present when she was rescued from the Tanenglian’s residence on August 10, 2009.

In her sworn statement given to the National Police-Women’s and Children’s Complaint Desk, Sollano recounted her ordeals during her five-year stay at the Tanenglian residence on Dapitan corner Bato streets, barangay Siena, Quezon City.

Sollano said she suffered physical and mental abuse in the hands of her employers as she was prevented from using the telephone, her cellular phone, sitting on the sofas, eat at any time, laugh, read and write.

The complainant added that the Tanenglians would bang her head on the wall, kick her in the body and slap her whenever she made a mistake.

Because of the maltreatment, she asked the respondents to allow her to go home, but they refused, saying that she had to finish her two-year contract.
Before her service contract lapsed, Sollano said she was told to sign a document by Aleta without telling her what it was for. She, however, found out later that it was to extend her contract for two more years.

“In my five-year stay in their house, I was not allowed to go out. They even threatened me that they would do something bad if I ask for help from outside,” she claimed.

She even recalled an instance when she was brought by Aleta and her daughter Fayette inside a room to take nude photos of her.

Sollano’s parents admitted that they have lost contact with their daughter for almost five years, prompting them to think that she was already dead.
They added that they learned of her whereabouts only from a fellow maid, Aljane Bacanto, who managed to escape from the Tanenglian household recently.

Maid sues former masters for abuse

A slew of criminal charges were filed at the Department of Justice yesterday by 18-year-old housemaid Mary Jane Sollano who was rescued by authorities from the Biak-na-bato, Quezon City residence of Mariano Tanenglian, brother of tycoon Lucio Tan, last Aug. 10.

Sollano filed against Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and children Maximilian and Fayette charges of maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery and frustrated homicide.

Sollano, a native of Zamboanga del Sur, said she suffered five years of physical, mental, and sexual abuse from her employers that only ended when another housemaid managed to call her father and alert the authorities about her predicament.

Sollano said she worked for Tanenglians from July 2004 to Aug. 10, 2009. She said she and the other house helpers were not allowed to use the telephone or cell phone, talk to fellow househelpers, laugh, sit in (family’s) chairs, look outside the window, watch TV, eat at any time, sleep or rest before their tasks were completed, and read any material or write.

She said she was punished for every small mistake, including whipping by a piece of steel or a thick slipper. She said Fayette once poured boiling water on her hand for a mistake and Maximilian kicked her, chained her, and did not feed her for three days when he caught her taking food from the refrigerator. Sollano said mother and daughter also took nude photos of her and threatened to show them around to other people, or to turn her over to a friend who owned a night club.

She said she wanted to go home in 2006 but was instead made to sign a work contract for two more years against her will.

Maid files abuse raps vs Tan brother

An 18-year-old maid in the household of a prominent Filipino-Chinese businessman yesterday filed criminal charges against her employers in the Department of Justice.

Mary Jane Sollano of Zamboanga del Sur was accompanied by her lawyer Al Parreno and her family when she filed charges of maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery, and frustrated homicide against Mariano Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and children Maximillian and Fayette.

Tanenglian is a younger brother of taipan Lucio Tan but the two become estranged after the former offered to testify against the latter in the ill-gotten wealth cases against the Marcos family.

Sollano was taken from the Tanenglian home at Biak na Bato, Quezon City, on Aug. 10 by personnel of the QC police, Commission on Human Rights, and Department of Social Welfare and Development.

She told of five years of “mental and physical abuse” at the hands of family members.

The Tanenglians’ lawyer, however, told the Inquirer Sollano was being used by Tan to harass his younger brother.

“The charges are part of a bigger picture and meant to discredit my client for volunteering to testify against his brother Lucio in a government case,” said Raymundo M. Quiroz in a telephone interview.

Maids file crime raps vs Billionaire

Two battered housemaids yesterday filed charges of physical injuries and illegal detention against Chinese billionaire Mariano Tanenglian before the Quezon City Police District.

Tanenglian, brother of tycoon Lucio Tan, was slapped with criminal raps by Mary Jane Sollano, 18, and Aljane Bacanto, 16. The victims were accompanied by their counsel, Atty. Al Parreno.

Parreno said the complainants were allegedly not allowed by the Tangelians to go out of the billionaire’s house for five years. The two maids were reportedly subjected to physical harm by the Chinese billionaire’s wife, Aleta, and their two children.

Sollano was “rescued” by the Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development and operatives of the QCPD Women’s Desk after Bacanto managed to escape from the Tanenglian’s residence at 30 Sto. Domingo corner Dapitan Streets, Brgy. Biak na Bato, last August 10.

Bacanto went to Sollano’s parents who thought their daughter was already dead. The “rescue team” was reportedly made to sign a waiver indicating that the victims would not file a complaint against the Tangelians.

After seven hours of negotiations, Sollano was released by her employers and given P2,500 salary, which she claimed was her first during her entire stay with the Tanenglians.

Shortly after her release, Sollano reportedly underwent psychiatric examination to recover from trauma. The two maids then decided to file charges against the Tanenglians. As to the waiver they signed, the complainant’s former lawyer Melanie Trinidad said the victims can still file a complaint since it was signed “under duress.”

Mary Jane Sollano, 18, and Aljane Bacanto, 16, were accompanied by their lawyer, Al Parreño, in filing charges of physical injuries and illegal detention against Mariano Tanenglian and his wife.

Parreño said the victims were not allowed to go out of the house at the time they worked with the Tanenglians.

He said the victims were oftentimes subjected to physical abuse by Tangelian’s wife, Aleta, and their two children.

Sollano was rescued by the Commission on Human Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development and QC Police Women’s Desk.

Bacanto escaped from the employer’s home last Aug. 10.

Maids file complaint vs Mariano Tan

Despite having signed a “settlement” with their former employer, two women filed a formal complaint against Mariano Tan for the abuse they allegedly received when they worked for him as housemaids.

Mary Jane Sollano, 18, and Aljane Bacanto, 19, went to the Quezon City Police District-Station 1 to give their sworn statements against the family of their former employer, an estranged brother of businessman Lucio Tan.

Lawyer Al Parreño said Bacanto escaped Tan’s house in Barangay Sto. Domingo and informed Sollano’s parents about their plight, leading to Sollano’s rescue.

Parreño said that they hope to be able to file criminal charges against Tan, his wife and two children today.

“We are looking into the possibility of filing charges of serious illegal detention, frustrated homicide and serious physical injuries,” Parreño said in an interview.

Asked about the settlement earlier signed by Sollano’s family with her former boss, Parreño said: “A compromise agreement is not a basis for (evading) criminal liability.” Village officials and police said the P150,000 was to cover Sollano’s unpaid salaries for the past five years.

He said it took time for the two house helpers to file the complaint after Sollano’s rescue last week since the two had to undergo counseling.

“They’re still undergoing psychological and medical treatment for the trauma they suffered,” Parreño said, adding that Teresita Ang-See’s group, Kaisa Foundation, has been helping the two women.

The house helpers claimed they suffered physical, emotional and psychological abuse at the hands of Tan’s wife and two children. Sollano claimed she was imprisoned in Tan’s house for five years while Bacanto said she was trapped there for three years.

Tan’s brother faces detention raps

Two former maids of the family of Mariano Tanenglian, brother of business tycoon Lucio Tan, yesterday filed complaints of illegal detention and physical injuries against their employer before the Quezon City police.

One of the housemaids escaped while the other was rescued by authorities on Aug. 10 from the Tanenglian residence at 30 Biak Na Bato corner Dapitan St., Sto. Domingo village.

Mary Jane Sollano, 18, who hails from Zamboanga del Sur, and Aljane Bacanto,19, from Leyte, went to Station 1 of the QCPD to file the complaint, accompanied by their lawyer Al Parreno.

He said they filed charges of serious illegal detention and physical injuries against Mariano, his wife and their two children.

“We filed the complaint before the police for them to conduct further investigation to determine if there is sufficient evidence to proceed with the filing of charges before the prosecutors,” Parreno told Standard Today in a telephone interview.

He said Sollano has been staying at the Tanenglian household for five years, while Bacanto served the family for three years.

The two claimed to have been maltreated, not paid wages and barred from going out of the house.

Bacanto managed to escape from the Tanenglian residence earlier this month and informed Sollano’s parents about her plight.

Sollano’s parents then sought the help of the Commission on Human Rights and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Lawyer Melanie Trinidad said that during the negotiation for Sollano’s release, she and Sollano’s father were asked by the Tanenglian family counsel to sign a waiver that she would not press charges against them.

Parreno of Diaz, Parreno, and Caringal Law Office said he has taken over as lawyer of the maids although Trinidad was still “helping in the case,” without elaborating.

He said he was handling several cases at the Station 1, and volunteered his services.

Parreno said the maids were undergoing couseling through Teresita Ang See’s Kaisa Foundation, which helps battered women.

2 maids file complaint vs Tan brother

Two former housemaids of the businessman-brother of tycoon Lucio Tan Thursday filed a complaint against Mariano Tanenglian and his family, alleging that they were maltreated and detained against their will.

“They filed their complaint against the Tanenglian family for maltreatment and illegal detention and were accompanied by a lawyer,” said Police Officer 3 Marilou Salanap, Women’s Desk investigator of the QCPD Station 1 in La Loma, Quezon City.

Salanap said Mary Jane Sollano, 18, from Zamboanga del Sur, and Aljane Bacanto, 19, from Leyte did not give other details.

According to Al Pareno, the victims’ lawyer, the subjects of the complaint were Mariano, his wife, Aleta, and their two children, Marvin and Fayette.
Sollano was rescued by the Commission on Human Rights and police from Tanenglian’s house in Biak na Bato, Quezon City on Aug. 10, following Bacanto’s escape earlier.

A police report showed that Sollano’s father accepted P150,000 from Tanenglian in exchange for a signed document saying they would not pursue and participate in a case filed against Tanenglian.

But Pareno said the waiver signed by Sollano’s father had no bearing on the complaint filed against Tanenglian.

“The compromise agreement is different from the complaints of the victims,” the lawyer said. The complaints indicated that Sollano, who said she was employed by the Tanenglian family for five years, was maltreated by the family, just like Bacanto, who stayed with the family for three years. Both also claimed they were not paid for their work and were not allowed to leave the house nor communicate with relatives.

The two are now under the care of Kaisa Foundation which helps women who have been victims of violence.

Inquirer tried but failed to reach Tanenglian for comment.
