Maid files abuse raps vs Tan brother

An 18-year-old maid in the household of a prominent Filipino-Chinese businessman yesterday filed criminal charges against her employers in the Department of Justice.

Mary Jane Sollano of Zamboanga del Sur was accompanied by her lawyer Al Parreno and her family when she filed charges of maltreatment, serious illegal detention, slavery, and frustrated homicide against Mariano Tanenglian, his wife Aleta and children Maximillian and Fayette.

Tanenglian is a younger brother of taipan Lucio Tan but the two become estranged after the former offered to testify against the latter in the ill-gotten wealth cases against the Marcos family.

Sollano was taken from the Tanenglian home at Biak na Bato, Quezon City, on Aug. 10 by personnel of the QC police, Commission on Human Rights, and Department of Social Welfare and Development.

She told of five years of “mental and physical abuse” at the hands of family members.

The Tanenglians’ lawyer, however, told the Inquirer Sollano was being used by Tan to harass his younger brother.

“The charges are part of a bigger picture and meant to discredit my client for volunteering to testify against his brother Lucio in a government case,” said Raymundo M. Quiroz in a telephone interview.
